Twelve Olives and Counting: ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

2010 is Here! Apart from trying to swallow the impending excitement of getting to write "10/10/10" on anything dated the 10th of October this year, I greeted the new year with my cheeks bulging with olives.

In Spain, or at least Madrid, it is tradition to ring in the new year by eating 12 Uvas--grapes, one for each strike of the clock as it tolls 12am on January 1st. Unfortunately, there were no grapes to be had on New Year's Eve because naturally everyone was buy them up in preparation, and the Bundys had just returned from family vacation, so we were grape-less. This didn't stop me however. In place of grapes, I substituted something equally Spanish: olives. As much as I have grown to love (with a passion) green olives, I was not prepared for the intense saltiness of 12 olives attacking my taste buds all at once. So the first thing I did in 2010, after swallowing a mouthful of olives, was to gulp down a glass of water and eat something sweet. Not a bad way to start the year, really. The two older members of the Bundy progeny and I then proceeded to hold a New Year's vigil, watching "Return of Zorro" and some of BBC's Jeeves and Wooster, along with some other scattered films. I went to bed at 8:30 am on New Year's day, having successfully completed my first all-nighter in quite possibly a year or more. It was a good time, and made me feel young again. Well, at least until I collapsed from utter exhaustion. Then I felt like an 80 year-old man. Such is life.
